Celebrating the Life Of Maurice Mikeska

maurice_mikeskaMaurice Marshall Mikeska was called to Heaven Wednesday, July 25, 2007. He was 80 years old. Born on June 30, 1927 in Taylor, Texas, he was the son of John and Francis Mikeska of Taylor and the second to the youngest of nine children.

He was a graduate of Round Rock High School, and served as Mess Sergeant in the United States Army in the Korean War. He was a very proud Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1131.

Maurice married Georgia Mikulencak on October 21, 1952. June 19, 1955, Maurice, Georgia and first child Laurice moved to El Campo to continue his passion of the barbecue and meat market business. He was thankful to the city of El Campo and considered it a privilege to serve his customers and friends a hearty plate of barbecue. Many times he was heard saying “El Campo has always been very good to me” and “what makes me happy is a good day of business.”

Besides the barbecue business, he enjoyed his farming operation, which was a reflection of his youth. Maurice, his brothers, and father, became involved in the meat business by running a meat club. They traveled from farm to farm weekly butchering calves and distributing meat. This enabled him to help teach meat butchering to his FFA class even though he was a student.

Besides his love of work and serving the public, Maurice enjoyed hunting and fishing. This is reflected in the mounted game and fish that adorn the walls of his restaurants.

Maurice cherished his family and his Catholic faith. He was thankful to God for surviving a major illness in 1992, and considered himself blessed for 15 additional years.
